Traveller Activity
Volunteering with the Traveller women’s group involves supporting a variety of activities, with a central focus on educational support, in conjunction with St. Margaret’s Community Centre for Travellers in Ballymun.
Tutors are needed for helping some women with basic literacy skills, while others need support in preparing for State exams such as the Leaving Cert. Funding for FETAC course tutors for the centre has been cut, so there is a real shortage of people to help facilitate sessions geared towards providing information for the women in areas such as general mental health, child development, and addiction.
Times are flexible, but all tutors will begin with an hour-long induction training at the centre, and start off by helping with some basic tutoring one hour per week. Following this, volunteers can get involved with working on some of the other activities such as helping with the FETAC courses, which run throughout the week between 9.30am and 1.00pm.
Women’s groups are an indispensable aspect of community development, and this initiative has been a really valuable addition to this particular area. Working with this vibrant and enthusiastic group will be highly rewarding, and provides a great opportunity to work alongside and build links with a community not always recognised or represented at college.
If you study in an area related to the health or social sciences, that will be helpful if you’re interested in facilitating the information sessions, but it is not at all necessary for working on this activity. We are interested in contributions from people coming from all areas and backgrounds. Variety is key, and all that’s strictly required is interest, commitment, a little creativity, and a lot of enthusiasm!
